Inviting Dr. DeVine

Dr. DeVine is happy to consider invitations to preach in churches on a wide variety of themes or biblical texts as well as on any of the topics addressed in his blog in the areas of theology, church history or historical theology.

Invitation Form

Dr. DeVine cannot accept every invitation and the questions below will help to discern and decide which opportunities best fit his gifts, abilities and calendar.

Thank you providing the information below. All or most of the information will be needed eventually and it helps to receive it all at once rather than in multiple emails.
Please copy these questions into an email and send your replies to mdevine@samford.edu or to:

Dr. Mark DeVine

Associate Professor of Divinity

Beeson Divinity School

Samford University

800 Lakeshore Drive

Birmingham, AL 35229

1. The name and address of your church/organization.

2. The phone and fax numbers.

3. The e-mail address and website address.

4. Event location and contact information. If the event will be held at the same location as in questions 1-3 above, simply enter “Same.” If different, please provide the information requested in questions 1-3 for the event location.

5. The name of the pastor and/or primary contact person for this event.

6. The email address of this person or persons.

7. The home and mobile phone numbers of the same person. This is helpful for several reasons: it provides an “after hours” means of contact if Mark needs to reach someone the night before his arrival; it provides an “after hours” means of contact if his family needs to reach him in an emergency; and it can be very helpful in reaching someone if he is delayed en route.

8. The date(s) of the event.

9. The kind of event at which Dr. DeVine is invited to speak (church Bible conference, men’s retreat, pastors’ conference, Sunday worship, etc.).

10. The number and length of times Dr. DeVine is to speak, the possible subjects, and the possible schedule. Obviously, some of these details may need to be discussed in future correspondence.

11. Will there be additional speakers at this event? If so, who?

12. Will there be music or other components included in the event? If so, please describe.

13. What is the range of anticipated attendance at this event? And if possible, please indicate briefly some of the general demographics of this group.

14. What airport should Dr. DeVine fly into and how far is it (timewise) from the event? Note that we prefer to make reservations on our end. Nothing will be booked without prior consultation with you about schedule, etc. Then the itinerary/receipt will be immediately forwarded to you to begin processing reimbursement. Note also that reimbursement will be requested as soon as possible as in almost all cases the credit card charges for the tickets must be paid prior to the travel. If this is problematic for you, please mention this here.

15. What is “dress code” for all parts of this event? Unless directed otherwise, Mark will wear a jacket ant necktie Sunday worship services. If your event is “casual,” he will assume something like Dockers and a shirt with no tie. Please do not use the term “business casual” without describing what you mean. Some have specified “casual” and meant a sport coat and slacks (as opposed to a suit), while others meant jeans and a flannel shirt. Please be specific as to what is most appropriate for each part of your event. Detailed information is very useful, as customs and terms vary from place to place. Besides, it helps for Mark to know how to pack only the clothes he’ll need.

16. Is there anything else that you want Dr. DeVine to know, such as whether you want him to use a particular translation of the Bible?

17. Why have you chosen to invite Mark DeVine to your event?
